COLUMBUS, GA - A Muscogee County Sheriff deputy and his K-9 were injured after their patrol vehicle was rear-ended on Interstate 185 northbound near J.R. Allen Parkway, Sheriff Greg Countryman told WTVM.

Countryman said the deputy and K-9 were on the shoulder monitoring traffic when another vehicle struck the patrol car. Both were taken to the emergency room. The driver told authorities he was distracted and traveling at a high speed. Countryman said he did not know whether the driver was in custody. HEAT units were checking whether alcohol was a factor.

An investigation is not a conviction. Everyone involved is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
