Updated Oct. 4, 2026, 8:45 PM ET: Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy named the two victims at a GBI news conference Sunday evening. He said the shooting happened at approximately 1:25 a.m. Sunday at a block party near the 900 block of Pine Street, and that 35 additional victims were taken to several regional hospitals for treatment.

“Victims range from 14 to 51 years old. Conditions of the victims at this time range critical to stable,” Sheriff Peavy said.

GBI Director Chris Hosey said at the news conference that the GBI has activated six investigative work units and that investigators are conducting interviews. “I don’t anticipate any threats to the public at this time,” Hosey said. No arrests have been announced.

Crisp Regional Hospital: In a separate statement on its Facebook page, Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele said its emergency department began receiving patients at approximately 2:11 a.m. Sunday. As of 2 p.m. Sunday, 26 patients associated with the event had come to Crisp Regional, two required emergency surgery there and two were transferred to other facilities, the hospital said. Several were admitted and many were treated and released, according to the hospital. The hospital's count of 26 is its own and is separate from the GBI's count of 35 injured; the hospital said others may have been treated at other hospitals.

“The tragic events of this morning simply should not happen in our otherwise peaceful South Georgia communities,” Crisp Regional CEO Steven Gautney said in the statement.

Earlier report: According to the GBI's preliminary information, Dooly County Sheriff's Office deputies were on patrol at the block party about 1:25 a.m. Sunday when shots were fired from the 900 block of Pine Street in Vienna. Deputies found multiple people had been shot, and found two people in the 600 block of Pine Street who were pronounced dead at the scene, the GBI says. The GBI says the two people who died will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies.

The GBI says the investigation is active and ongoing. When it is complete, the case file will go to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review and prosecution.
