Scam alert: Ben Hill sheriff and Statesboro police warn of fake officers calling for money
Two Georgia law enforcement agencies, the Ben Hill County Sheriff's Office and the Statesboro Police Department, are warning residents about callers who pretend to be officers and ask for money.
Ben Hill County Sheriff's Office: In an official Facebook post, the sheriff's office said it does not have a "Lieutenant Clark." A scam caller using that name has been calling from 229-258-9784. The sheriff's office says it will never call telling you to send money to stay out of trouble, avoid arrest or resolve a criminal matter, and it will not call asking for bond money for an inmate.
What to do: Don't send money or give out financial information. Hang up and call the sheriff's office to verify. "When in doubt, hang up and call us." The Ben Hill County Sheriff's Office number is 229-426-5161.
Statesboro Police Department: In an official post, Statesboro police said that if anyone claiming to be from the department calls asking for odd forms of payment, it wasn't them. No one there will ever call asking you to buy gift cards or anything else to get out of a warrant. Hang up and call 912-764-9911.
